Harvard University Muslim Alumni

Privacy Policy

Effective October 3, 2026

Harvard University Muslim Alumni (HUMA) uses this site to keep in touch with its community: alumni, students, and friends of HUMA. Only HUMA’s board and staff can sign in. This page explains what we keep, why, who handles it, and the choices you have.

What we keep

  • Your name, email addresses, phone numbers, and city.
  • Your Harvard schools, degrees, and class years.
  • Your job and employer, and links to your LinkedIn or Harvard alumni directory profile.
  • Your involvement with HUMA: events you signed up for or attended, gifts, answers to our forms and surveys, emails we sent you, and notes board members make when they are in touch with you.
  • Which HUMA emails you want to receive.

It comes from forms and surveys you filled out, event sign-ups, donation records, HUMA’s own lists kept over the years, and information you made public, such as a LinkedIn profile.

How we use it

To stay in touch with you: invitations, news, and the occasional fundraising appeal; thanking donors; and keeping our records accurate. We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Who can see it

Current HUMA board members and staff whom an administrator has given access. Their access ends with their term, and every change they make is recorded.

These services handle it on our behalf:

  • Google Cloud hosts the site and its database in the United States, with encrypted backups. Gmail sends the emails board members write here, from their own accounts.
  • OpenAI helps read the columns of a spreadsheet when one is added. It sees the column names and a few disguised sample values, never whole rows. OpenAI does not train its models on this data and keeps it for no more than 30 days.
  • TypeSafe suggests when two records may describe the same person. It sees names, email addresses, phone numbers, Harvard degrees, cities, jobs, and profile links, never gifts, notes, or survey answers. TypeSafe does not train its models on this data and processes it in the United States.

Your choices

  • Every HUMA email has a link to choose what you receive, or to stop email from us altogether.
  • To see, correct, or delete the information we have about you, email harvard.muslim.alumni@gmail.com. We may keep a short note that you asked not to be contacted, so you are not added back from an older list.

How long we keep it

For as long as you are part of HUMA’s community, or until you ask us to delete it. Backup copies are deleted on a schedule: daily backups after 90 days, monthly backups after three years.

Board members signing in with Google

When you sign in, Google shares your name, email address, and profile picture with us. If you connect Gmail, the site can only send the emails you write here; it cannot read, search, or delete your mail, and you can disconnect it at any time in your Google account settings.

HUMA’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Cookies

One cookie keeps board members signed in, and another remembers their time zone. We use no analytics or advertising cookies.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will post the new version here with a new date.
